Happy Holidays from Dushi Trade!

Sorry for the absence for the past few weeks. This weather has had a person really battling! Yes, we overlooked Black Friday *insert Big Fail sign*, but the season has just begun! This season we have a few "treats" planned for our customers. Dushi Trade will be offering free Priority shipping on all continental US shipments... YAAY! This promotion will run until 11:59pm on Saturday, December 18th. We also plan to run a new promotion called "The 12 Days of Christmas". As we countdown to December 25th, we will to communicating daily the offer of the day via Twitter and Facebook. If you aren't following Dushi Trade... umm, that's going to be a serious problem!

Run! Run! Run!

Just getting in from a rather adventurous morning!

Today, here in New York, the 2010 ING New York Marathon is currently being ran, and I just so happen to live a stone's throw from the 15k mark of the marathon. As most who know me know, I was an amateur competitive runner in cross country (from the ages of 12 to 17) and track & field (from the age of 7 to 21). I was considered a "middle distance" specialist (my race was the 800m), so I wasn't quick nor had a ridiculous amount of endurance but was a combo of both. I did and still don't care for long distance runs. This is a major reason why I tip my hat off to the marathoners who were on the road or currently still making there way to Central Park. They are doing this in 47 degree weather that feels a bit chiller with the winds. Me+ Cold weather + over 26 miles= Not me and that!

Unless you are in the tri-state metro area of NYC, you may not be aware that one of the area's cable providers Cablevision has been battling with Fox and CW over money and during this dispute, Cablevision subscribers have been without the networks. Yelp, no MLB playoffs, no World Series, no football, no Glee, no House. Well, fortunately, I have not been effected because even though I live in a Cablevision area, Cablevision and I parted ways as of July 28, 2010 right before my annual trip to Barbados. It really wasn't a hard decision really. I refused to pay an additional $30 a month for subpar channel lineup after having paid a "promo" price for the previous 12 months. I had and loved DirecTV before, but my building management decided change its position on the satellites so the service is not allowed (can someone say probably getting kickbacks from Cablevision... but anywho). Yes, I miss watching the History and Discovery Channels and such, but I've adjusted to live with my digital converter box and, yes, I still have an analog TV/ VCR combo (may change this holiday though with the cheaper prices for LCDs).

Don't laugh at me.

One result from this break up, I decided to try out Netflix. So far, looks like after my trial period, I may stay a subscriber. During my trial period (which I'm still in), I have actually gotten to catch up on movies. As most who know me well know, I don't sit still much so now that I can say I have seen movies like Obsessed, Marley & Me, etc. is a feat (even if they aren't new DVD releases). A few days ago, I discovered Netflix has my favorite childhood TV series in their inventory. If you see the title, I think you can guess the series. Yelp! Punky Brewster!

I just started this week with this series and can you say, I have digressed back to my 6 year old self (the age I was when the series debuted). I can say Punky Brewster helped me in a lot of way. First off, it helped me to come to terms with my being different. I was a very tall & slim child subjected to teasing because of this fact. Because of Punky's unconventionally dressing and ways, I thought I was cool because I was different from the norm at school and the teasing was nothing. There were other ways Punky helped me as a child, but would rather not go into it and derail the direction of the post so....

While I watched this series yet again, I began to wonder how would Punky be today as a 30-something woman if she was an actual person? Would she still be embracing her own quirky style? Would she still be that go-getter and take-no-prisoners person? I have come to conclude that she would definitely be the same Punky. oh and she most definitely would be a Dushi Trade woman :). Can't you just see her rocking these to work (like I do)?

Vices...

Good day, everyone:

So I decided I have to make a more conscious effort to do more blog entries. I have access to enough technology (e.g. email, 2 smart-phones, iPad and a MacBook Pro), so I can at least knock out an entry at least once a week. At one time (back when I was a wee little thing and winning Young Author's competitions), I thought writing was a calling. I guess not so much!

But anywho!

Today's entry was through up as I came into the day gig today. About a week ago, I was spending time with a dear friend while he did some electronics shopping (side note to friend: Thanks for the lesson on external hard drives. As always, you confirmed what I have always expressed about goods. Product is made to basically get minimum usage so you will have to come and buy a next one when the current one just "magically" lasts 1 day pass its factory warranty). Long story short, the conversation of personal vices came up. My friend admitted his vice is video gaming and, yes, I shall agree with him. I know personally how it can become a vice. Yes, Leah was a gamer when gaming wasn't as "hot". I was a big "Nintendo-holic" in my day. I was a charter subscriber to Nintendo's first gaming mag "Nintendo Power", ya'll. I spend plenty hours and beat plenty games such as Contra (I still to this day remember the "code" to use to get 50 extra lives), Super Mario, Track & Field... MEMORIES! But my participation and dedication to track & field as I got older made it hard to sit for hours at a console.

Yet, this conversation had me thinking. Do I even have a vice? I like to read, but because of time, I can't consider that a vice. Yes, I like a nice glass of rum mixed up with a lil' sumthin', but it's not a daily occurrence. Cooking? As of late my appetite has been nonexistent so the culinary arts thing ain't high on my priority list. We shall see since it's getting colder, and I plan to stay in more. Am I a foodie? Nope because I can be rather particular about my food. Sex... I wish! Next! I thought maybe traveling, but my pockets aren't deep enough yet to keep up with the desire so that would be a "nope". Music? Yes, I have a ridiculous amount of cds, cassettes, albums and mp3 files between my apartment and my mom's home in IL but haven't really purchased much music this year. Nope, so let's check that off as an option. Exercise? Nope, ain't been inside the Y since the Friday before my birthday in September.

After some thought, I guess I can say my vice would be crafting. I was an art student from young so I know my way around an art supply or craft store. You would swear I'm on store payroll and I order inventory. I usually know about the newest and latest supply, and if I can't afford the newest innovation, I sure do know the basics that will get the same result (never told you about how I taught my college class how to paper mache after we had a project of making mini garments with paper as the only supply... no cloth allowed and I still prefer to do hand-drawing oppose to using computer aided designing as I demonstrated in a many of logo designs I have drafted).

I have a wardrobe full of supplies (beads, adhesives, thread, cloth, patterns, leather, feathers, needles, paint, brushes, dyes... I know I'm forgetting something) and still stay hitting up Michael's Arts, AC Moore and the Art Store/ Dick Blick's for even more supplies. Ok! I think I have pinpointed my habit!

So... if you have a vice, what would that be?

Dushi Trade @ the Artists & Fleas Market (July 18th & 25th)

So....

What do you have up for the next two Saturdays of July? Well, we here at Dushi Trade will finally be hitting the streets (so to speak) selling our current line Spice Road as well as some old favorites. Come rain or shine (keeping our fingers cross for some fab weather!), we will be at the Artists & Fleas Market at McCarren Park in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. The market runs from 10am- 6pm and is located in the North end of McCarren Park, adjacent to the McCarren Field House and near the year-round Saturday Green Market.

Hi all...

I know this isn't pertaining jewelry nor fashion related, but when I saw this while walking home after my day gig last week, I had to capture this on film.

If you are wondering what the image is of, it's a photo of a boy (about 3 or 4 years old) walking with who I presume was his mother and sibling... wearing a Superman costume. He had on all (top, bottoms and cape) just minus his mask.

Anywho, thought it was adorable and wanted to share. Sure wish Superman would swoop down to help me get this blog to flowing, but I'm working on it. Bear with me as I try to get some ideas flowing.

Hi all..

Sorry for the very long lag with the last post. Promise to get this blog off to a new start and start posting on a regular basis. This post is going to be a pretty short post. Just wanted to inform everyone after various delays with product supplies, I finally have unveiled the new Spring/ Summer 2008 line for Dushi Trade. The line is called "Intrigue" and hopefully you all will find the designs intriguing. Also hope you find something in our line for that new spring or summer look you have just been dying to wear!

What is Dushi Trade?

Hi, I'm Leah Nolden, owner and designer of Dushi Trade, an accessory company specializing in women's jewelry and welcome to our BlogSpot! Dushi Trade is officially 1 month and 15 days old so it's still pretty much in its "infancy". With this BlogSpot, I want to give supporters of Dushi Trade some insight into the company, trends and hopefully some how-to pointers in production.

That said, a lot of people have asked after learning of the company's name, "What does dushi mean? That some kind of Asian term?" Well, here comes lesson numero uno...

Dushi is a term taken from the creole language of Papiamento that means "sweet", "precious", or "sweetheart". Papiamento is spoken on the Caribbean isles of Aruba, Bonaire & Curacao (ABC Islands). No, I don't speak the language nor am I of West Indian ancestry (100% American). I first heard of this term upon hearing a soca (a form of uptempo music popular in the Caribbean region that's a mixture of soul and calypso) song by the Barbadian soca group Krosfyah. The song is entitled "Dushi" and to this day can be found in my music library upon my Sidekick 3. Out of curiosity, I researched and discovered the word's meaning, and you can say "fell in love" with the term.

But why the name Dushi Trade?

When I finally decided to do this thing called small business--selling my jewelry designs, I was stuck on the choice of a company name. Should I just name it after myself? With age, I have come to love my name. Although it's pretty regular, its uniqueness is that I don't know many Leahs nor is my surname a popular one, but I just didn't want my name out front so to speak. So during my daily commute to the daytime gig, my shuffle playlist on my Sidekick played the tune Dushi yet again... and for some reason, I had to rewind, imagining dushi as a perfect name. It's different, but how can it tie into what I'm doing?" I kept thinking... playing word match... then I finally got the word match and a vision of what is now Dushi Trade: "Being a creative individual and having interacted with my counterparts, I realized that we have a tendency to feel that any of our creations are our 'babies'... hence the jewelry designed at Dushi Trade are our 'precious' babies".

So welcome...

That's just a little background on what Dushi Trade is all about... fierceness, non-conformity, and individuality.
